MY STORY

Damian Lonsdale, Ph.D.
Leadership Consultant

I grew up in small-town Iowa and, after graduate school, worked as a business professor for the University of South Dakota. Although this was an immensely rewarding career, my growing family was making me rethink my priorities. Eventually I came to the conclusion that life was too short to not be near all my family back in Iowa. Suffice to say I have a large extended family in the Des Moines area.

With the move came the opportunity to reexamine my professional life and I realized that what I enjoyed most about being a professor was the applied aspect, rather than the “publish or perish” aspect. The reason I became a professor in the first place was to help people learn how to get the “people side” of business right and ride a wave of prosperity as a result. It’s exciting to discover that sometimes even small changes can make a big difference to an organization’s bottom line.
RESEARCH-BASED
My philosophy, based on empirical research, is that clearing a path and creating a context that fosters high performance creates a win-win scenario that benefits employees’ well-being just as much as it benefits the organization’s bottom line. In addition, I’m not tied to any program or franchise. My approach is organic, and I never try to fit a square peg into a round hole. That’s also important because while books and off-the-shelf solutions are static, my eye is always on new research and insights that continue to shape our understanding of the workplace. Let me ask, has your field changed over the last 10 years? Mine has too, and I believe in keeping up.
Why should you listen to an Industrial-Organizational psychologist? The business world has so much power to shape our society, for better or for worse. I side with the corporate citizenship school of thought that says “let’s use that power consciously, to better our communities, our society, and the world.” And, fortunately, the choice to use power for good does not come at the expense of profitability. Rather, the companies doing the most good enjoy a reputation that appeals to the best employees and engenders fiercely loyal customers. In a nutshell, I want to help the good guys and gals win. So let’s get started.
